### Unicef Wants and Needs

This week in Year 6, we were looking at fundamental similarities between people who look very different. This led into discussion of how, although people may look different, we all have the same basic needs which feeds into children's rights.

The children had to look at Unicef's Wants and Needs cards to develop an understanding of what people need to live, survive, develop and thrive. They then had to work with somebody they would not usually work with to discover what similarities they may have.

Here is an example of some of their work highlighting their similarities.

### Reasoning and visualising in Maths - Mental Multiplication

As part of our warm up in Maths today we used concrete resources (and pictures)
to visualise and reason about what is meant by 7 x 6 and how we can use this as a starting point to extend our mathematical thinking into decimals, negatives and large numbers.
Just look at the range of representations we made to completely cover our tabletops (and who doesn't like writing on classroom tables👦👧?)!

### Reasoning across the Curriculum

In year 6 we are starting the new year by having a real push on developing our reasoning skills across the curriculum. This involves clarifying our thoughts with each other and talking through our reasoning - about a character, about an equation, about a scientific concept - before putting our thoughts on paper in clear, well considered sentences.
Over the past week we have sought to explain mistakes and justify the odd one out in Maths; reason about which words best represent a character in English; and make well-reasoned predictions about a snowman's coat in Science.
As you'll see in the examples below, Welford's year 6 students have risen to the challenge with aplomb!
2018 is off to a stunning start!

### Taking our learning out of the classroom

During the first few weeks in year 6 we have made a real effort to take our studies outside the classroom to see if we can apply our learning in different contexts and demonstrate a real depth of understanding of key mathematical, geographical and computing terms.
It has been great fun but we have also showed a good grasp of key terminology such as polygon, peninsula and algorithm. Hopefully these collages give you a flavour of our work!
